    What is a Coast Guard Documentation Number?
    This is the National Form of Registration for your boat. It's the "official number" awarded to each documented boat that stays with the boat forever. It does not change as the boat is resold over the years from one owner to the net. Vessels that measure at least five net tons are required to have a Documentation Number. One thing to understand is that "five net tons" does not refer to the weight of the vessel, it is associated with the vessel's volume. In simple terms, vessels that are more than 25 feet in length will measure five net tons or more.

    Why do I have to install an “Official Number” in my boat?
    Displaying your "official number," along with the name of the vessel  and your choice of hailing port, validates your Certificate of Documentation for use of the boat. The vessel name and port may change with each owner but the official number never will.

    A Documentation Board is evidence of current (or prior) vessel documentation. It is a way for a prospective boat purchaser to search the Coast Guard records to verify ownership and lien statutes of the boat.

    Are there any consequences for not properly marking my boat?
    Yes. The owner of the vessel can be liable for a civil penalty of not more that $10,000 per violation. Each day of a continuing violation is a separate violation. Please refer to the reverse side of your Certificate of Documentation for verification of these statements.
